What Is Mastering and Do You Need It

Mastering is the final step in the professional audio process and is sometimes confused with mixing. While mixing is the process of combining multiple tracks into a single 2 track stereo file, mastering is the process of manipulating the mixed down 2 track stereo file with the intention of making it ready for radio airplay and/or distribution.

Mastering is the last opportunity to enhance your music and is NECESSARY if your CD needs to be the most viable radio ready master available. Every recording project has different goals and needs but if you are considering whether your project needs mastering - remember that all professional songs / albums are mastered!

A mastered track will undoubtedly be perceived as more professional because listeners over the years have become accustomed to hearing music as a polished and fully finished recording.

Probably the best advice is to make sure your recordings sound good, dynamic and clean before the mastering stage and you will almost guarantee a radio ready master.
